a lot of people would think you are merely being chauvinistic, but actually from what I have seen of the raw diamonds, they are of exceptional clarity and brilliance. With good cutting it is unlikley they will be surpassed easily. There are adds on bus stops in TO for NWT diamonds from People's jewelers.
I am dead sure the DeBeers people are undercutting the Canadian mines seriously as their valuations are not that high. (They routinely beat the Austrialians for 25%. I am afraid they are beating their patners Diavik and Diamet too, for as much as 50% of the true raw price -- or more. DeBeers as usual lies. If it were possible the Canadians should cut themselves loose from the CSO and just do their own cutting and marketing, as we have the quality, it is obvious, and we are closest to the largest market. The rest is aggressive advertising. The cut price is ten times the raw price and today machines and lasers can guide cutting with utmost precision.
I used to hear resorption and price figures out of Diavik and they sounded high on resorption and low on value compared to the SA figures. but in examination of the core, I saw zero evidence that the resorbtion was at all significant. If it were as much as 40% as they said, then you would see it in diamond pitting, rounding and dull edges. All the diamonds I saw were clear, sharp edged, regular crystal structure, completely clear of blemishes, of absolute white colour, and having no or few inclusions. It did not jive at all with what was being said. All string pulled expertly no doubt by DeBeers.
