ECONOMY TALK: Consumer confidence fell to 114.3 in August from 116.3 in July (revised down from 116.5 initially). That was well below the consensus forecast, which called for a rise to 117.5. The deterioration in the employment situation weighed on the present situation component, which accounted for all of the decline. The present situation component fell to 145.8 from 151.3, its lowest level since April 1997. Of those surveyed, 33.4% said jobs were plentiful, also the lowest reading since April 1997. The expectations component rose to 93.3 from 92.9.
