When I lived in Anchorage, it was common to see everyone driving around with a fist sized hole scratched in the frost.
Did it myself fairly often.

Then I found that pure ethanol as the windshield washer fluid did short work of all but the coldest frosted windows. Plugging your circulating heater in often keeps your windshield fairly clear also as some of the heat from the percolator circulates through the heater coils and convects to the window.
