Mr. spaulding "when it arrives"; that could be two to three years before a cost effective RW DVD appears on the scene. Toshiba has stated that the technology currently is not there for a full scale RW DVD (DVD drive that writes more than once). as far as "killing" IOM and SYQT. doubt it. both companies, SYQT included if it can get its financial act together, will have already been exploring DVD and alternatives. it is more likely at the current juncture that further advances in thin film/magneto resistive will obsolete DVD before it arrives. The advantage that DVD would have over thin film/MR currently is media cost. there are advances being made even now regarding other forms of data recording which could outstrip the usefulness of CDR/DVD in the next five years. DVD certainly has many characteristics which would make it a successful over current methods.
