Don,

I think that it has finally changed.

I was gratified to see that my opinion that OSX was the most important thing that Apple has done is an opinion shared by Jobs despite the successes of the iPod and iMacs etc. It's really the cornerstone of the whole scheme.

I think the tide IS finally turning. I think people are switching, in the USA at least I see Apple gaining market share. Not from statistics but I'm feeling people's attitudes are changing. PEOPLE I TALK TO TAKE MACS SERIOUSLY NOW. They are no longer novelties. Maybe if you look overseas people will still be buying X86 computers (with Linux in many cases), but in the US Apple is poised. i think you will see Apple getting the 5% of the US market within a couple of years. After that it's still too fuzzy BUT there are several synergies going:

1) The Virus problem has become SO pervasive it's gotten INSANELY bad. People are CURSING this plague. (My girlfriend had 600 files infesting her computer.) It's pretty amazing the major computer makers are begging Jobs for a port. But for once I agree that there is no point for Jobs to port at this time. OSX is a golden tree that's just now starting to bear fruit. Let the PC makers stay in their leprosy camps with viruses and spyware. Even highly experienced PC Geek users are cursing spyware. Old thinkers will be left behind.

2) A lot of people are realizing that there is a strong synergy going with Linux and other UNIXes and for the first time realizing that they could and can live without Microsoft. Macs are no longer "toys". Even the Mac Mini is not a toy. It's a baby UNIX workstation. And the geeks know it. FIREFOX is a HUGE synergy, it's killing Explorer pretty quickly among anyone who doesn’t NEED Explorer and that's making Apple more compatible as people abandon and complain about sites built with Proprietary Microsoft code. Microsoft hasn't made many friends with their registration schemes and buggy software either. Microsoft doesn't have hardcore fans.

3) The iPod and iTunes have changed everything period. They are Apples ambassador of ease of use. I even see Pod casts as challenging radio pretty quickly, and carving out a good portion of what would have been the digital satellite radio market. DSL or better bandwidth is here to stay. I think paradigm will also hurt a lot of retailers and companies who make stereos. People are enjoying music on ever smaller home systems. Apple is right in the middle of all this. My pal, relative computer newbie, just bought a couple of tiny but potent studio monitors which he's connected to his Mac and he loves it. And he loves his new Shuffle. It's not just the iPod, this is a paradigm shift. I sell media. This is coming like a train. As many here know I used to work at Tower and I now think they are doomed. Apple is going to finish them off. That says a lot. They were once the largest media retailers in the world. They seem like a corner market in an old neighborhood now.

4) the Mac Mini is a really nice cheap home machine but it's also a nice little cheapo server with ultra easy to set up apache. Heck I was even able to set apache up on my box and I'm network phobic to a huge degree. Grandma & Grampa are realizing that they DON'T need a windows machine for email or the internet and their Systems Maintenance adult children are realizing that a Mac is easier to maintain for Mom & Dad and it's just as easy to use if not easier. The Mac Minis are CHEAP ENOUGH and FAST ENOUGH. That's all Apple has lacked in the past.

I've been skeptical at times about Apple, I use PCs too (as little as possible) but I'm feeling now is their time. I think it's payback time. I think Apple has some really great plans and they've executed like champs sneaking all this stuff in. The Wintell block heads are finding themselves caught flat footed. They have TERMINAL corporate think. Apple may not get 50% market share over the next 10 years but I'll be surprised if they don't get a pretty big chunk.
