I would be very careful of MS in the long run. I believe that he's shot himself in the foot - big time and may never recover. I say this as a "not dis-interested 3rd party", I am a Microsoft Certified Professional.
The actions of the last year have me wondering big-time on big Bill's perception of reality.
First, settle the damn lawsuit. It has been blatantly clear to anyone in the industry that MS has enjoyed a monopoly over the last 7 or 8 years. And now its clear to the whole nation except Bill. But Bill has never lost anything in his life and can't accept this. Look at the stock price (not counting the recent loss) since this started really brewing a year ago. Stagnant - and yet with tremendous profits. And look at the forecast until this is settled - stagnant or lower. And look at the effect on the brightest minds at MS who are compensated with stock and options - They will not be coming/and or will be exiting. They will be able to do much better elsewhere. The writing is on the wall for MS - either settle this thing or start a slow 5 to 10 year death.
On the professional side - another hugh egotistical blunder. You've all heard of the MCSE and MCP programs. What MS normally does is bring a new product out - develop a ciriculum for it and a set of tests and then phase out an earlier version of the same product. This is normally done on a realistic time frame to actually let the real world use of the product die out - and then phase the test on that product out. Well in Bill's bold attempt to force business to upgrade to Windows 2000 (whether they need it or not) they have announced the forced retirement of the Windows NT 4.0 track by the end of next year. This has been an extremely popular track and Windows NT 4.0 will be around for a long time after that. In fact alot of the businesses I deal with are just upgrading to Windows NT 4.0 and are many years out from Windows 2000. But in spite of a tremendous outcry from their trainees and learning centers - they have ignored all reason and gone on with this. And the only reason is to sell copies of Windows 2000 to customers who may or may not need it. The MCSE's and MCP's in the field have been sort of a "sales force" so to speak for Microsoft products as they are certified to deal with them. They are very dis-gruntled right now over this BS. And MS in true fashion is not backing down. This also shows me they are really starting to lose touch with the real world and if not corrected - will be the start of the end for them.

All of this is IMHO - of course. Take what you want and leave the rest!
