You have, to my recollection, accurately summarized Gilder's opinions. As presently constituted, wcdma therefore will in reality not work in the commercial world. Higher power usage, in my opinion, is the killer. Spinco (as an independent company) would be foolish to ignore its current chip advantage by refusing to make a chip for the wcdma market and lose the sales or position in the future market, even if the carriers wish to pursue a technology that, on balance, is inferior. Remember also, Qcom's strategy is to do whatever is necessary to encourage adoption of cdma, and providing a quality wcdma chip before anyone else promotes earlier adoption of wcdma, which means more revenues for Qcom.
