One simple reason why it was/is wrong.

Bechtel and Halliburton have both achieved their levels of prominence through the same type of shady backroom political gamesmanship (not a rare practice in our apparently corporate controlled political system). Both political parties, and individual members of the two major parties, have been beneficiaries of under the table largesse from these two corporations. The mutual back scratching goes back many administrations...Brown&Root, LBJ.. and before.

No one was complaining then...You're wrong there. Many who know how the "system" works have been complaining about Bechtel and Halliburton's incestuous relationship with various politicians and administrations for many years. Does the name Allen Dulles ring a bell? How about Casper Weinberger? William Casey? Richard Helms? Lawrence Eagleburger? George Schultz? Dick Cheney? The list goes on and on.

I'm guessing that you don't have a problem with that? It's probably just free market political democracy in your mind? Representative democracy at it's fine$t?
