TiVo or a Tivo-like product is for real. Replay TV is its biggest announced competition. Surely there will be more competitors. The box prices will fall quickly when the consumer products companies jump into the market. The alliances and programming features will be important selling points and the alliances will provide revenue streams via advertising and subscription services. If he takes it, makes sure he gets a healthy package of options.
