When obama takes office in Jan we will get a glimpse of how serious financial mess we are in, now that Volcker is a financial advisor to Obama's team. Clearly Volcker has indicated that the recession should play out (see link below).

If Obama continues loose monetary policy with attempts to prop economy up (like Bush) I would interpret that the economy is in extremely serious trouble short term and that even Volcker can't see another short term solution(since he will be on board with that decision) that would start cleansing things up.

If on the other hand, Volcker's advice is heeded to (letting recession play out), the economy may not be in too bad shape and at least they are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel in clearing out excesses instead of creating new ones, as painful as it may be in the short term. The current printing and bailouts can be safely attributed to Bush and possibly we could have done without them.
Our first indirect insight into the mess the current admin has created (since they would not directly tell you). If former is the case gold could lift up and we could see a huge fallout, if latter, we go into 2 years of an all clearing recession that takes all asset prices down to (or below) their norms and we can start a new bull market then.
