More DISH Interactive Stuff, HDTV For DirecTV

In addition to debuting plans for DISH 500, EchoStar's new 500-channel offering on a single small dish, the DBS giant will introduce at this week's satellite TV expo in Las Vegas plans for more interactive services that will join the same ranks of its WebTV-based DISHPlayer product.

EchoStar will unveil additional details surrounding its relationship with OpenTV and how they will use the company's technology to create DISH Network interactive services, such as e-commerce and banking, customer care, advertising, news and music. The company will unleash plans for a new set-top box at the show that will support OpenTV and DISH 500 systems.

EchoStar plans on building up more interactive channels for its push technology service set to debut at the end of the year, and some of those projects will be demonstrated at EchoStar's booth. The company also will announce new features for its DISHPlayer product, including recording capabilities similar to TiVo's technology that will be used by EchoStar competitor, DirecTV.

Meanwhile, DirecTV is preparing HDTV services for the near future, just in time for Thomson's first RCA and ProScan-branded HDTV receiver systems. Other manufacturers such as Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Toshiba will follow with HDTV boxes of their own.

DirecTV also will demonstrate TiVo personal TV recorders. Philips plans to integrate the TiVo service into a DirecTV receiver early next year.
