Ericsson To Launch Breakthrough Switch In Autumn

Forgive me if this has been posted!

Thursday August 21 3:03 PM EDT

STOCKHOLM - Swedish telecoms group Ericsson will launch a breakthrough AXE switch this autumn which can handle phone calls, Internet services and broadband traffic, a trade publication said.

"The launch means a direct attack on computer giants such as Cisco (Systems) and Bay Network ," the bi-weekly Elektroniktidningen said in its latest edition to be released on Friday.

The switch -- which will not be able to handle broadband traffic until 1998 -- will be crucial for Ericsson's position as a global supplier of switches as price pressure will kill its current AXE switch, the newspaper said.

"It will be cheaper for operators to choose our new AXE switch which handles phone calls, ATM (broadband) and IP (Internet) services than keeping several separate networks," Lars-Erik Eriksson, technical director at Ericsson said.

He declined to specify cost savings.

Ericsson has invested several billion crowns in developing the new AXE switch, the paper said.

Telephone companies worldwide have invested about 90 billion crowns ($11.2 billion) in AXE and Swedish national telephone operator Telia is interested in changing to the new switch.

"We would by happy to try the new switch," said Klaus Claussen, technical director for Telia's network services.

Telia currently has six large fixed networks with an annual operating cost of four billion crowns and the new switch would mean cost savings of up to one billion crowns, Elektroniktidningen said.

Claussen said other switch suppliers were interested in the same ideas as Ericsson but no other supplier had advanced as far as the Swedish group.
