I have a question for you. Has Ericsson or Nokia announced a single chip solution???? The problems with integrating RF and TF in the same chip has been the holy grail up to now. Nobody has done it. If Q has done it then it is a major advancement. So to answer your question, I guess the answer is YES.

If you look at the press release, you'll notice that Qualcomm repeatedly states that this is the world's first single chip "CDMA2000 1x" solution. The reason for that is that TI is supposed to sample their GSM/GPRS single chip solution this quarter. TI (and by extension the GSM/GPRS handset manufacturers) should have a 12-18 month head start in bringing down the cost and size of handsets....especially on the low-end.

Of course, the real race is to see who can get this done in W-CDMA. I would think that Qualcomm's ability to come out with a CDMA solution should give them an advantage, but TI does have quite a bit of time. FWIW, I vaguely remember them talking about a 2006 timeframe for a W-CDMA version of the single chip but cant seem to find a source right now (perhaps it was in a management presentation).

One interesting difference between the two solutions is that Qualcomm mentions that they will be integrating the power management function onto the single-chip. This would seem to be a step ahead of TI which still has a PM chip on their block diagram of their solution (though it is reduced in size).

In any case, this announcement by Qualcomm really is a big deal....even if they are at parity with TI in terms of RF integration, this would still put them quite a bit ahead of the rest of the industry.
