Why does Apple refuse to explain its sliding market share in personal computers? 22.11.2004 16:17
EXECUTIVES Market research company IDC recently reported a slide in Apple’s share of the personal computer market. Apple declined to explain to investors why its market share is sliding.

Here are the IDC numbers:

In Q3 of this year, Apple’s worldwide market share fell to 1.78% (this was 2.19% a year ago).

In Q3, Apple’s U.S. market share dropped to 3.33% (this was 3.75% a year ago).

The Mac Observer broke the news. According to the author, Gartner had previously reported very similar numbers. The author also mentions that: “An Apple spokesperson had no comment when asked for reaction to the market share results.”

When a reader used our Q&A service, we were pointed to these unfortunate market share developments. I mailed and had a telephone conversation with Nancy Paxton who is Senior Director Investor Relations and Corporate Finance with Apple.

Unfortunately, Nancy stated: “Thanks for the opportunity, but we're not interested in posting a response.”

The question is why not?

The news is already out there and each engaged investor is forced to develop its own opinion. As we all know, investors do not like uncertainty so I would think it is in the interest of Apple to eliminate this uncertainty.

The question certainly is central to an investor's assessment of Apple's fortunes.

I mailed Nancy again and hopefully we all can soon learn why Apple won’t answer this longstanding and important investor question.
