Sadr looks like a hero because he's offering an alternative to US corruption and abuse.

Sadr is offering a quick job and cheap glory to a lot of young unemployed thugs. He's not popular with the Shia. All he's got going for him is his lineage. The Shia know he's just a thug. The Senior clerics are negotiating his surrender.

Yes, the Iraqi people know what's going on. They know that most of the guys in Abu Ghraib are their former Saddamite masters, which caps the sympathy among the non-Saddamite population.
