A reviewer in the San Francisco Chronicle headed his article "Van Damme's 'Return' Has Just Enough Kick." He referred to it as the usual Van Damme action thriller, "which means it's better than might be expected." He goes on to say, "Like Paul McCartney songs, Van Damme pictures tend not to linger in the memory. But in the midst of the experience, they give pleasure." The reviewer believes that Van Damme has outgrown the films in which he appears, and deserves better.

I thought the reviewer had the perspective to recognize that the film's dramatic deficiencies did not detract from appreciation of the film's entertainment value, and place in its genre.
