I wasn't really "after" something--just curious why people buy these external drives with expensive media while CD ROM media have become so cheap. I didn't realize there was this problem with the file system on CD ROM drives. What makes it worse is I don't have much of a conception of what a file system is, (but I have high hopes). I do appreciate your answers and your patience and believe I have the general idea now. Thanks, and regards, wily PS I did have that problem setting up my CD ROM recently. Now it's showing in "My Computer" but not in "Device Manager"
