Why do you think Sprint went out of their way to deliver a data service, but they went with circuit switched service, instead of IS-95B packet switched service?

Is this a problem of lack of base-station equipment or handsets? How is it that the far east carriers can deploy, but Sprint couldn't?

I think the difference may lie in the handsets....Japan completed their nationwide network in March and I believe that most of the handsets that have been sold there are equipped with the MSM3000 (data rates upto 86kbps). In contrast, I dont believe that there was an IS-95B enabled handset until the release of the Thinphone in June (unless the Denso Touchpoint had one). The real flood of handsets in the US with the right ASIC is occurring right now. PCS has the Thinphones along with a new Sanyo and a couple of new Samsung handsets. PCS may wait until they get a critical mass of handsets into the market to turn on higher data rates.

From a network side, I dont think it is an expensive upgrade.....OTOH, noone has ever gone broke betting against phone companies moving quickly.
