Silicon wafer ASPs fall 20% in 1Q09, says paper

Commercial Times, February 9; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Monday 9 February 2009]

The ASP of 12-inch silicon wafers has slid by 20% sequentially in the first quarter of 2009, in line with utilization drops at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

The ASP of 12-inch wafers has dropped to US$100 in the first quarter of 2009, the paper indicated. Silicon wafer suppliers Formosa Sumco Technology (FST) and MEMC Electronic Materials have seen orders frozen by TSMC and UMC, whose current days-of-inventory (DOI) reach two months on average, the paper said.

In addition, due to production cutbacks at Taiwan's DRAM chip suppliers, FST and MEMC have also confronted shrunken demand from the sector, the paper added.
