I have been doing the same by feeding the output of audio device (cassette player, turntable, audio from my vcr) to the "line in" input of the audio card and "Total recorder" convert that to MP3. I think I paid $ 12.oo for Total recorder about 3 years ago. They have already given me 3/4 updates for free.

A search for total recorder will get you to their web site for a download.
