You're right there's rarely any "surplus" around here either. However, I almost always have a cash reserve on hand for each of my investments. I consider it an active part of each holding and use it when the market stinks, then harvest it back when the market's are smelling better. Each time it cycles through it turns a LIFO gain of about 30%. Just my personal M.O.
