If your toilet keeps running jiggle the handle, the flapper might not be down. If the flapper doesn't seal you can get a kit for $5. If it's running and the tank is full check the bulb. Bulb's ok then one screw and some bending of the rod's in order. You've just described how I've kept from losing my mind at times. However, eventually, bending the rod is not enough....
