Roger, I understand how you feel. I think each of us would have liked that solution. However, it is and was my understanding that our allies, (Saudi Arabia, etc.) rejected that idea. We would have had severe problems with our relationship if we would have continued on. Maybe in hindsight we should have done it anyway. However, I think it is important to remember we put in some pretty strong controls that went away under the Clinton-Gore administration. We had a strong alliance to control what happened in Iraq in consort with our allies. We had people in there to inspect to insure Saddam didn't build weapons of mass destruction. Saddam soon found out we were paper tigers and resisted and we (United Nations) left. When he challenged the agreed on controls is when we should have had license to make him either conform or suffer the consequences. The Clinton-Gore administration took little or no action to my knowledge. They seemed completely passive on it.
