Iraq didn't try to colonize the world. Iraq was not a threat to us or anyone else. We didn't 'defeat' Iraq, we went there to steal its one natural resource. You'd defend your plot of land too. If this were WWII, we wouldn't be invading a third world country for oil companies. The US Military doesn't know who the insurgents are: - they're the Republican Guard! - they're AQ! - they're Syrians! - they're foreign fighters! - they're Baathists! - they're criminals! - they're regular people fed up with us!
