I3 is still a reasonable processor, especially for linux. I am currently using ubuntu on my laptop and it is also my desktop working machine. I expect mint will work fine. Getting a couple gratis is a great deal. I use fvwm2, a lightweight window manager and not unity or gnome or kde. But fvwm is not really supported well on the net. But I've used it since early nineties.
