Hi Jay,

Yes, I have been a long time VLSI bull, even being occasionally called an "irrational-bull". This was largely based on my having worked with VLSI and being impressed with the IP they developed and the high calibre of many of the key people there.

Sadly, I also held a large VLSI stock position from last fall's high 30s region to 7 1/4 yesterday. This magnitude of decline is staggering, even considering the company has gone from a fairly high level of profitable in late 97 to more or less break-even today. Like many of us here, I am troubled by the management turmoil the company is currently undergoing. There is no way to put a positive spin on any of that. Part of the blame also needs to rest with the board of directors, which has not exhibited the strong leadership the company requires.

Getting back to your specific questions, I believe the current shortfall is more related to VLSI's continued reliance on Ericsson, who are getting killed by Nokia in the marketplace, more than anything else. Q4 and 99 actually look good, both due to new Ericsson models, and significant new business with other wireless manufacturers. Digital entertainment is doing OK. Jim
