Apologies for butting into a discussion that is not mine, but 'fear' and 'greed' are, respectively, extreme versions of natural human impulses, self-preservation and self-interest. Personally, I have no difficulties in building a political philosophy on the basis of these instincts, though I prefer to invoke the principle of 'enlightened self-interest': i.e., sometimes the good of the group requires that I ignore my narrow self-interest. For example, it would be in my narrow self-interest to pay no taxes at all, but my enlightened self-interest requires that *some* government expenditures are necessary and therefore *some* system of taxation is necessary. Of course, exactly what the appropriate level of government involvement in is a life-time's debate.
