Joan, I know what the word "nemesis" means. I do find it rather troublesome when people quote the dictionary in posts, because it tends to imply that the writer does not believe that the addressee understands the word. I particularly did not quote the dictionary in my post to Michael because he is already sensitive about how often people correct his composition and spelling.

I think you write very interesting posts, but in some ways you remind me of my mother, who was constantly concerned about proper everything about words. I do have an English degree, but I deliberately choose to use it only to make my own writing and speaking more expressive. When I started this thread there were quite a few people around here who were intimidated and did not want to post here because they didn't write or spell perfectly, which I reassured them was a shame because I was interested in what people thought and felt, and promised never to correct them.

Now I will try to explain my point about "nemesis". My Merriam Webster's has as its second meaning "a formidable and usually victorious rival or opponent." It is from that meaning that it is in a way a compliment to consider someone one's nemesis. What I was also saying to Michael is that I did not need to call someone a name or make them an enemy (if he was interpreting it that way), because I was confident in my logical arguments.
