Russell Wilson and the Seahawks ...

"Luckily, Wilson has made a habit of thriving without surrounding top-tier talent." ... Say what?

I find that to be an extremely accurate statement. Russell Wilson is definitely an elite quarterback entering his prime and his new contract certainly reflects that. Top-tier talent beside and in front of him has been somewhat sparse in his 8 season's where he made 2 SuperBowl appearances and earned a ring, however.

<< Bobby Wagner, Richard Sherman, Marshawn Lynch and others must be in some category above top-tier. >>

The PFF statement reflects the fact this decade's Seahawks team is best known (or remembered) for its exceptional defenses rather than the offense that Wilson leads. The Legion of Boom brought 2 NFC championships and a SuperBowl win. Marshawn Lynch is really an exception to that and most definitely was an elite and durable top tier running back. Chris Carson (or Rashaad Penny) may yet appear to be cut from the same cloth but they have yet to gain that recognition. Doug Baldwin was a good but not elite slot receiver and Tyler Lockett has promise but isn't there yet. The O-line in front of Wilson is very middle of the pack (PFF ranks them 23rd in the NFL preseason).

Sherman and Cam Chancellor were greats and Bobby Wagner still is. Seattle boasts a stellar defense but in the NFC is it as good as the Cowboys who beat 'em in the playoffs last year? They most certainly don't have a running back of Zeke's caliber in their run 1st offense nor is Lockett in a class with Cooper on the offensive side of the ball.

Overall Fiore and Simms' #6 ranking is the highest I've yet seen the Seahawks ranked in the preseason. I think they definitely deserve a preseason ranking in the top 10, but in the Top 5 might be a stretch. That said, any team with a preseason ranking in the consensus top dozen could play in the SuperBowl this year. Over the course of the next 17 weeks injuries will play a big role in the fate of many preseason contenders.

Enjoy, this 1at Sunday of the new NFL regular season. Presumably your Seahawks will survive the Bengals clash and my Eagles well take out the Redskins. If not we'll have a gloomy Monday

Cheers, - Eric L. -
