COMMUNICATIONSWEEK October 28, 1996

From the article:
"In the short term, it doesn't mean anything," said Jon Oltsik, a senior analyst at Forrester Research Inc., a Cambridge, Mass., consultancy. "From a product standpoint it doesn't mean anything." But from a perception standpoint, Oltsik added, users still associate Novell with proprietary software rather than with the Internet, and this effort may help correct that problem.

"This will help Novell sell themselves as an open vendor that's also going to be driving what happens on the Internet," Oltsik said.

Novell, he argued, is doing a better job at approaching the IETF than Microsoft did with its CIFS file system proposal, which it proposed with Digital Equipment and Network Appliance Corp.

Utility companies-aware that their power grids can be turned into a telecom-munications infrastructure-are closely watching a remote meter reading pilot project that allows NetWare LAN information to be sent over power lines.

Remote meter reading would provide utility companies with a badly needed networking technology to streamline their internal functions. Utility companies then could decide whether to offer a broader portfolio of telecommunications services to businesses and consumers.

A feasible alternative

Some companies that have eschewed remote meter reading in the past are reconsidering it because of the the new technology. Northern States Power Co., Minneapolis, is one of them.

"We've looked a number of times at various methods of remote meter reading, and it's never [seemed] cost-effective, because sooner or later you have to get wires out there," said Mark Larsen, administrator of systems integration for Northern States.

But, because the Powerline technology would let the utility use wires that are already there, Larsen said the company is taking a second look.
