France is irrelevant to the US public debate except as we remember how dishonest the RNC propaganda machine was in 2002-2003 attacking our allies (not just France) and calling every American who questioned Bush a "traitor" who was "in league with the terrorists".

That shameful period harkened back to the old McCarthy era. It was the worst and darkest side of America turned on its own people, democracy and public wealth.

BTW: The French are fighting bravely in Afghanistan and fronting for us in talks with Iran because Bush's stupid "Axis Of Evil" speech made it impossible for him to sit down and do diplomacy. That mistake may turn out to cost many more US lives unless we get rid of Cheney-Bush soon.
