First Solar expansion said to be posing pressure on thin-film PV module competitors Nuying Huang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 4 March 2009]
US-based thin-film PV module supplier First Solar, ranked second among all makers of solar cells and modules around the world with output of 503MWp in 2008, will be expanding its production capacity and output to possibly become the global number one in 2009, posing great pressure upon its competitors, including ones from Taiwan, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
First Solar, the world's largest maker of CdTe (cadmium telluride) thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules, is actually the only one attaining economies of scale amid makers of CdTe thin-film PV modules around the world, the sources pointed out. In addition to its existing dominance in the market, First Solar will acquire solar power-generating projects from its rival OptiSolar, the sources indicated. |
