There is a good reason to delay the capacity build at Fab30, even if AMD had to farm out production to Motorola to meet market needs. It appears that the final 20% of the buildout at Fab30 will be using 193nm lithography equipment. Assuming that only half of the steppers in a line need to be at 193nm for critical mask steps, these 193nm lithography steppers could be teamed with an equal number of 248nm lithography steppers to get AMD to 40% 130nm production in late H1 2002 without replacing 248nm lithography equipment. If AMD were to delay the installation of some lithography equipment until they make the transition to 193nm lithography, they would have less equipment to replace in H2 2002.
