Lieberman: Obama transition 'just about perfect'

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) applauded each of President-elect Barack Obama’s moves since winning the election as “just about perfect” Tuesday night.

“Everything that President-elect Obama has done since election night has been just about perfect, both in terms of a tone and also in terms of the strength of the names that have either been announced or are being discussed to fill his administration,” Lieberman told a gathering of reporters in Hartford, Conn.

Lieberman continued to work to mend fences after his contentious presidential campaign role, saying he regrets some of the things he said about Obama in advocating for Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

“In the heat of the campaign, I said some things about President-elect Obama that I could have said more clearly," he said. "And I said a couple of things that I wish I hadn't said at all.”

Senate Democrats voted last week to allow Lieberman to remain chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, upsetting many liberals who wanted the McCain ally to be punished for his actions on the campaign trail.

Lieberman thanked his Democratic colleagues and said he looks forward to a “more normal” political environment. “I think some of the points of contention, major contention, are ending,” he said.
