The new Deere contract may accelerate automation, which was quickly being adopted anyway.

One interesting thing I learned this summer is a relative of mine works in a union warehouse with a 2-tier wage structure like what the automakers started applying after the bankruptcies and reorgs.

Well, the lower tier is so low that they have a hard time filling the jobs this year. Furthermore, the turnover in those entry level jobs makes Amazon turnover look like lifetime employment.

Because it is a 3-year contract, the lower tier wage is not up for renegotiation until next year sometime.

I think the lower tier is $13.13/hour, and Amazon is paying $18-$19/hour in the same market.
