<<Noel [H&Q analyst] predicts that Ascend will one day be
bigger than rival Cisco Systems. "Cascade has
more complex technology and there is more room
for growth in the ATM switch and frame relay
system markets that are used in wide-area
networks.">>

Gary, as the thread expert on CSCO, I haven't heard your analysis of this fairly
amazing/intriguing statement made by Noel in a 4/98 Forbes article. I'm really not
sure how to take it. Your comments? djane

Djane.... Well to be honest I haven't heard Joe say this. I'll have to give him a call and see what his basis for this comment was. He may mean in a specific market - I can't imagine he meant as an organization.

I agree with him however that ASND has a price performance edge and I also agree that ASND is more adept at building interfaces. To be honest this is my frustration. Given these advantages I would expect ASND to be performing better financially. Anyway I'm not sure that the underlying software technology advantages and ability to deliver on them are all the different from CSCO/STRM. Let's face it, whether it's home grown or purchased, CSCO is not a technology slouch and every technology leader will have a technological advantage in some space...but to say ASND can catch up and pass CSCO when ASND does not play in the same markets is, in my eyes, a leap of faith. Rather I suspect he meant that ASND will be bigger than CSCO in the carrier backbones..which I think we all believe is possible in the relatively short amount of time...barring any hiccups by ASND or aggressive posturing/product development by CSCO.

That being said, I respect Noel's opinions emmensely. He's plugged into the industry and has been for years. So, I'll have a chat with him and report back...for what it's worth. If it's not possitive I'm not sure whether the stallwarts on this thread will care..but I promise to be objective in my reporting.
