Newswatch: Wi-Fi 802.11n chips in short supply, says paper
Original date: 2009/3/17

Networking IC designer Realtek Semiconductor has increased 802.11n chip orders to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) thanks to strong netbook sales in China, India and other emerging markets. The shortage of 11n chips will last till the end of May, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

Realtek's orders in March are 20% higher than in February. The company's total orders to foundries will top 7,000-8,000 units in the second quarter, the report noted.

In addition to Realtek, 802.11n chip suppliers Ralink Technology, Broadcom and Atheros Communications have also increased their orders to foundries and backend companies which has spurred recruitment and extended working hours. The semiconductor industry is expected to grow 20-25% in the second quarter, the report cited industry sources as saying.
