They have sucked the Big 3 dry, to the point the body is nearly lifeless, almost a cadaver, and now the unions are willing to talk...

It is interesting to think about what might possibly come of this. UAW has GOT to see the writing on the wall. This is management's change to get some real concessions and if they blow it, everyone loses.

It should be simple enough for the union to see that if they can't concede sufficiently to make the Big 3 competitive with the other guys, it is a dead end. But the unions are going to be more interested in the here and now than they are in protecting the future of the membership.
