Below is a quote of a brief outline by the CDMA Development Group of the possibility of high speed data transfer over CDMA. The description is located at cdg.org :

The CDG has already developed CDMA circuit switched and packet switched data specifications and approaches for integration with Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) networks. The CDG has also begun work on further enhancements of CDMA to provide for high speed data services. Today, the CDMA network supports 9.6 kbps and 14.4 kbps transmission. The CDG vision is to develop data architecture and protocols to support applications that require 64 kbps to 500 kbps data speeds. This will open up many exciting applications, such as high speed mobile Internet access, for the users of the CDMA radio network and will bring the World Wide Web and high speed video into the mobile environment.
