Unfortunately, you are correct.

The American public has the attention span of a flea with ADD. While we haven't forgotten about 9/11, we turn our attention to people like Clarke, who is selling a book, and flail ourselves because of Abu Ghraib.

Self-examination is terrific--the radical Muslims need to do a lot more of it--but it is a handicap when done obsessively, as we seem to do whenever we do not live up to our values.
