Last night the crowd was finally dispersed by a tear gas assault.

The attacks earlier by the police on bystanders were reportedly a few rogue cops according to at least one bystander.

The police were out there for 20 hours a day for 2 and 3 days. The mayor didn't take the proper preventitive measures. For instance, the national guard was called in only in time for the second day, after most of the major disturbances had been during the first day.

Apparently there were various anarchist groups, including a group from Utah who forswears any kind of sex or drugs, and waves razors at people at rock concerts.

There were groups from Oregon and other places as well. Apparently the labor rank and file in the march on the first day were prepared to take the side of the police if all hell had broken loose.

The Seattle mayor and police chief had been notified by various police offices in cities where some of these groups originated, with offers of advice on how to cope with particular groups each was familiar with. The Seattle offices apparently didn't take any of these other sherrif's departments up on it.

There have been hundreds of protesters thrown into jail, and today there was a moving rally which ended at the jail downtown with calls to free the arrested protesters.

The rubber bullets are .68 caliber fired from paintball gear at over 400 fps.

Some people are predicting that on new years the police tactics so many are protesting today will be demanded by the public then -- should any of the y2k problems actually occur and another state of civil unrest ensue.

FWIW
Andy
