I guess it is time for Arafat to go. Beter if Peres said that instead of Sharon. And Peres has spoken. But still it is for the Palestenians to decide. Interesting to see what happens if the Palestenians vote him back in.

Peres resigned to discarding Arafat as peace partner

July 3 2002

Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres is resigned to no longer considering Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as a partner in the Middle East peace process, Israeli media reported on Tuesday, quoting remarks he made at a Labour party congress.

The Labour leader told the congress on Monday that new political realities had arisen following US President George Bush's call last week for the sidelining of the Palestinian leader.

Israel "must seek out or bring about a new partner in the war against terrorism, a partner appropriate for peace," Mr Peres reportedly told the congress.

He added however: "It will be possible to find adequate partners if there is a political outlook alongside the war on terrorism."

Previously, he maintained regularly that, despite Mr Arafat's "mistaken" role in unleashing the second Intifada nearly two years ago, he remained the elected president of the Palestinians and Israel's partner for future peace negotiations.
