(BSNS WIRE) Datawatch Enters XML Arena With Powerful Legacy Conversion Tech Datawatch Enters XML Arena With Powerful Legacy Conversion Technology Business/Technology Editors AIIM 2000 NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 2000-- New Technology Allows Users to Transform Invoices, Purchase Orders, EDI Streams, and Legacy Reports Into XML Without Programming Datawatch Corporation (NASDAQ: DWCH), a leading provider of enterprise reporting solutions, data transformation tools and support center software, announced today an XML product suite that transforms legacy transaction documents and text data streams into XML on an automated basis. The suite, which will be available to Datawatch partners next quarter and to end-users in the fall, includes a Windows-based XML GUI designer and an XML Data Pump. The technology will also be incorporated into Datawatch's own line of enterprise reporting products. "XML is a simple and effective way to exchange information between otherwise incompatible systems," said John Kitchen, vice president of marketing at Datawatch. "However, transforming legacy information into XML is not easy. Our solution takes advantage of the one thing all transaction systems have in common: the ability to generate transaction documents. Our new XML Suite translates those documents into XML, thereby eliminating the need for companies to re-build the documents or build a parallel XML reporting infrastructure. "Datawatch is uniquely qualified to deliver this solution," continued Kitchen. "We've been honing our report-centric data extraction technology for more than ten years with Monarch, our industry-leading report mining tool. With more than 300,000 users, we've learned how to tear apart even the most complex report layouts with ease. Throw us any report, statement or transaction stream and we can turn it into XML." Datawatch's new XML Suite allows transaction data, statement data, EDI streams, and other structured document information to be extracted, scrubbed, transformed, validated, and converted to well-formed XML on an automated basis without new programming. The result is that users can quickly add XML capabilities to in-place back-end transaction processing systems, helping organizations reduce interoperability costs, and helping ISV's get products to market more quickly. "This technology is of great interest to us," said Tim Sloane, vice president of product planning at Tilion. "Using the Datawatch products the enterprise can stop worrying about how to produce appropriate XML from legacy systems, and instead focus on how to improve business processes by leveraging XML-enabled e-business. By using Datawatch, Tilion expects its customers will more rapidly be able to integrate business data into the Tilion Web Intelligence solution." A prime example of the value of Datawatch's approach to XML is electronic bill presentment and statement delivery. By using existing bill and statement creation processes to generate XML, users can dramatically speed up e-commerce implementations while fully leveraging their investment in existing systems. Other value examples include formatting data streams as XML on an ongoing basis for third party data providers, and helping financial institutions reconcile information from different regions around the world. "Datawatch's new initiative is an eminently sensible way to go about implementing an XML reporting and analysis system," said Bob Moran, managing vice president of decision support research at the Aberdeen Group, Inc. "Enterprises should leverage the knowledge, expense, and planning and development time contained within their current reporting systems. Datawatch's XML suite will enable them to do just that." About the XML Product SuiteDatawatch's product suite includes a Windows-based XML GUI designer and an XML Data Pump. Each product will be available first as an enabling technology for Datawatch partners and then as an end user product. The XML GUI Designer allows the user to view a sample copy of the input document and break it into templates and fields. Each template generates a table of records which can be logically filtered and extended through calculated fields and database joins. The designer also provides a visual interface for defining the relationship through which the input templates map to an XML schema. The XML Data Pump, when fed an individual input document or stream of documents, has the ability to search the document profile database and associate the appropriate profile with the input. Using the profile, the XML Data Pump generates and outputs a series of XML documents. Integration with Other Datawatch Products "We see XML as the interoperability standard for business-to-business communication, so we plan to integrate XML functionality into all of our desktop and server-based products in the future," added Kitchen. "For example, our Monarch|ES Report Portal will be able to create combined views of data from multiple sources including reports, SQL databases and flat files, and output the result as XML with no programming. Monarch Report Portal will also be able to read and archive XML document types as well provide tagging for transaction-level data sharing such as EDI. XML will greatly enhance the value of our products for information sharing between enterprises and their trading partners, channel partners and customers."
