PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 2, 1999--
Aplix, Microware, Tektronix and Wind River Systems to Deliver
EmbeddedJava Technology to their Customers Worldwide
Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that Aplix, Microware, Tektronix and Wind River Systems have been licensed or have signed a letter of intent to license EmbeddedJava(TM) technology. These companies, who are already PersonalJava platform licencees, now plan to distribute and include EmbeddedJava technology in their products to their customers worldwide. EmbeddedJava technology provides developers with a configurable Java(TM) environment to build embedded consumer and industrial devices such as cell phones, pagers, printers, industrial controllers, and telephony equipment including switches and routers. Transparent to consumers, systems with EmbeddedJava technology will reliably and effortlessly control those sophisticated devices with which users interact everyday. Letters of intent are subject to the closing of definitive agreements.
"We are pleased to see such strong industry support for EmbeddedJava technology," said Curtis Sasaki, group manager, Sun's Consumer & Embedded. "We are committed to providing device manufacturers with the embedded software solutions they need to take advantage of the portability and flexibility of the Java programming language in their product software."
"Sun now provides a true solution that addresses the requirements of embedded applications and we are pleased to be working with them to bring Java technology to the embedded market," said Avi Schlank, director of product marketing, Wind River Systems. "EmbeddedJava Technology is an out-of-the box option for Wind River's VxWorks real-time operation system, thus allowing embedded developers to bring Java technology to their applications economically and with minimum risk."
"Customers expect specific measurement solutions tailored to their needs. EmbeddedJava technology allows Tektronix to deliver these application solutions in a timely and cost-effective manner while building a library of utilities that enables the rapid development of additional applications. We are pleased with the opportunity to work with Sun Microsystems to utilize EmbeddedJava technology to benefit our customers," said Steve Jennings, director of marketing for Tektronix Design, Service and Test Business Unit.
The EmbeddedJava Application Environment was designed for device manufacturers and developers who want to leverage the tools and class libraries provided by the EmbeddedJava Application Environment for embedded devices with dedicated functionality and severely limited memory. Typically, these devices do not require general purpose web browsing. The EmbeddedJava Application allows developers to configure and compile an efficient environment that contains only those fields and methods required to run their device's applications.
"As the first real time operating system company to license and deploy Java in an embedded device, we realize the importance of EmbeddedJava to enable our customers to receive the advanced technology solutions they require to remain competitive," said Ken Kaplan, chief executive officer of Microware Systems Corporation. "EmbeddedJava and Microware's OS-9 RTOS provide an exceptional foundation that manufacturers and developers can rely upon as they build complex applications."
Using the EmbeddedJava Application Environment, manufacturers of embedded devices can realize the benefits of Java technology. The Java programming language reduces time-to-market by enabling manufacturers to develop their products faster, reusing code and decreasing testing and debugging cycles without additional porting costs. In addition, Java technology provides for the secure deployment of services to the growing range of networked consumer devices.
"We believe EmbeddedJava technology will enable manufactures to design consumer oriented devices with more functionality in a shorter development time, " stated Ryu Koriyama, CEO of Aplix Corporation. "As the leading company in providing ITRON based real-time solutions based on Java technology, Aplix has been working closely with Sun to provide Java environments for audiovisual equipment and car navigation systems. EmbeddedJava technology will expand our product line and solutions for our customers."
