What liberals don't understand is, most conservatives are more tolerant of people they disagree with and are willing to at least listen and participate in debate. I have no problem working with people of all political stripes and adhering to and accepting the results of the democratic process. I think the thing that has really turned a lot of people off to democrats is their bullying manner of ramming bills through congress without giving the opposition a chance to participate. This is not supposed to be the way America works, yet democrats have been behaving as if it is. People instinctively see that as unfair and are rejecting those kinds of tactics.
