I believe their Berkeley education was directly responsible for making them believe it was safe to hike there.

It is not just Berkley, it is left wing attitudes.

In general, left wingers have a problem understanding the world. Somehow they believe if you are nice to people and smile and be real friendly and outgoing, then folks as Iranians will just love you and get along great with you.

Having 10 years or more of your life ruined in an Iranian prison is bad enough. However, the problem is that the be friendly and the world will love us attitude seems to be a problem with some people in responsibility. Several left-wing presidents seemed to have that attitude (e.g. Carter, maybe Clinton, certainly Obama).

Even if the presidents don't believe it, too many of the public believe it and that influences how foreign policy is implemented and the behavior of our presidents with our foes.

What some may not realize is that being friendly not only does not work with these governments, some cultures see it as a form of weakness.
