I thought it was common knowledge. It was widely reported at the time, but those were the Reagan years, and the blame fell to the indicted underling people in the Reagan administration, like Ollie North and Admiral Poindexter, who was pardoned by Bush's dad and now works for Bush. The CIA has a long history of financing operations "off the books" with drug profits. I wouldn't be at all surprised if such stuff was going on in Afghanistan right now. We seem to be looking the other way about their poppy cultivation, almost eliminated under the Taliban.
