I rarely remember to wear green. Usually I rely on my wife; on school days she makes certain the youngest has a bit of green on.

Usually I handle the complainers by telling them my green is in my wallet and only comes out if I'm in the mood to buy them a drink. I have a marked Irish bent all year, I don't sense I have to pin a tricolour on my rear end just to join in the spirit.

If you can get over to the West, the people are indeed friendly. There are a few cultural things one should know, such as not leaving your change on the bar (too showy), but all in all the locals forgive your ignorance readily because you are an American. They all have American families.

One favorite story about the money I recall happened to my brother. He was with three guys and one handled all the nominal expense money. When that fellow, "Norton", ran out the others all gave him an equal amount more, a hundred pounds each or whatever.

So Jack was buying the bar a drink and told the barmaid to take it from "Norton". The barmaid looked concerned but did as she was told.

Next time Jack did that she scolded him, telling him not to take advantage of "that poor man" (Norton). So Jack gave her a twenty, told her to take it out of that and give the change to Norton.

When she did, Norton looked down, asked Jack what was going on, and then handed him a twenty.

The barmaid walked away muttering about "crazy Americans".

It's definitely a fun experience if you ever have the chance.
