James Vincent Forrestal (1892-1949) -- also known as James V. Forrestal -- of Beacon, Dutchess County, N.Y. Born in Beacon, Dutchess County, N.Y., February 15, 1892. Democrat. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War I; U.S. Secretary of the Navy, 1944-47; delegate to Democratic National Convention from New York, 1944; U.S. Secretary of Defense, 1947-49. Catholic.
Jumped from a window on the 16th floor, and fell to his death, while a patient at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Montgomery County, Md., May 22, 1949. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
