Both Microsoft and the Unix world has been very good at preventing boot-sector viruses to spread, and with good virus-software on the Windows platform, program executable viruses are also well protected. It is a fact, that protection against viruses without antivirus software is easy, you just build it into the operating system. Even the boot sector protection in Windows 95 works that way.

As a frequent Linux and Windows user, I'm still amazed, when people think that a business computer network with full e-mail and web access wouldn't be safe without antivirus software. I'm also amazed, that some e-mail systems are able to carry viruses. And in my eyes the virus-enabling e-mail software (e.g. Outlook) does not has better functionality, just more frightened users.

I don't think I turn the article into something negative. Windows still has virus problems, and I think the MSFT recommendation to use Unix for copying Windows installation discs is still quite good.
